Roraima: the Strangest Mountain on Earth:
If I were a better hiker, this would be very high on my list of places to visit before I die. It’s a landscape out of science-fiction — quite literally, as the exploits of early adventurers here is said to have inspired Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World. While no one’s found any dinosaurs up there (yet), this amazing mountain plateau claims a number of impressive superlatives: it’s quite possibly the wettest place in the world, it boasts some of the highest (and most abundant) waterfalls in the world, and it’s one of the oldest places in the world, with caves and rock formations in which extremeophile life forms have developed more or less undisturbed for two billion years. I could write a whole book on this place (and people have), but who better to guide us through Roraima’s wonders than our preeminent naturalist-adventurer, David Attenborough?
