Use Paste Special to Perform Batch Calculations in Excel

If you have a bunch of rows or columns in Excel that need to be updated with a math operation, instead of applying a formula or editing each cell, save some time by using Paste Special.

The GuidingTech blog shows us this power user trick, using the example of adding 50 to a number of cells all at once. Basically, you copy a cell that contains the value you want to adjust the other cells by (in this case, 50), then select the cells you want to change, and in the paste special window, choose your math operation (e.g., add).

You can add, subtract, multiply, and divide with the copied value. Another example: If you're running a promotion and want to decrease all the numbers by 10%, copy 0.90 from one cell and use the multiple paste special operation.

This simple trick is handy if you don't need to keep the old data around, of course, and it works with complex spreadsheets containing a lot of cells.

#771 Waking up before your alarm clock and realizing you’ve got lots of sleep time left

Peaceful and extremely quiet Dark windows, dead silence, dim moonlight dancing on the walls. The night is calm and quiet and peaceful.

And then BOOM: your eyes burst open and you bust out of bed in an adrenaline-gushing, brain-rushing, heart-crushing state of emergency. Dizzy and blind, you urgently stumble over to the clock as thoughts whip through your head — am I late for work, did I miss the buzzer, do I have time for a shower?

You swipe the clock, zoom it up to your squinty eyeballs, and get a good look.

“4:56 AM,” it screams in its trademark crisp, bright-red florescent silence. “4:56 AM.”

Thump Thump, you're alright Stunned, your wobbly brain slowly pieces it together. “That is too early much than I thought,” you think. “I should back into go to bed.”

And then a slow, thin smile curls on your lips as you turn to stare at your crumpled cocoon, readying yourself to flip the pillow and dive back into Bedhead Paradise. Oh, you know that sweet cruise into dreamland will be a doozy for a few big reasons:

  • Ready to rock. Hey, the bed is pre-warmed, the mattress pre-dented, and the cool side of the pillow just waiting to hug your hot, salty head. Detangle the sheets a bit and you’re good to go.
  • Dare to dream. If that rocking dream you’re having is still fresh in your head, you can clench your eyes, squeeze your brain, and pop right back into it.
  • Take a break. Hey, your body woke up early because it felt pretty rested, so the extra sleep is just its way of saying “Go ahead, take a long lunch.” People, this is like a snow day without the shoveling — just a big, wet puddle of free time to soak up guilt-free.

Yes, waking up before your alarm clock and realizing you’ve got lots of sleep time left is a great thing. Sure, your heart pulses and your brain convulses, but you quickly realize there’s a long time left for a lot more sleeping.

And you know what we like to call that around here.

AWESOME!

Looks good, don't it?

The Colorful Life of Antonia Larroux

vIf you can discern anything at all from her obituary, Antonia Larroux had a non-stop sense of humor. Her paid obituary ran in the New York Times Friday and Saturday, although Larroux lived in Mississippi.

Waffle House lost a loyal customer on April 30, 2013. Antonia W. "Toni" Larroux died after a battle with multiple illnesses: lupus, rickets, scurvy, kidney disease and feline leukemia. She had previously conquered polio as a child contributing to her unusually petite ankles and the nickname "polio legs" given to her by her ex-husband, Jean F. Larroux, Jr. It should not be difficult to imagine the multiple reasons for their divorce 35+ years ago. Two children resulted from that marriage: Hayden Hoffman and Jean F. Larroux, III. Due to multiple, anonymous Mother's Day cards which arrived each May, the children suspect there were other siblings but that has never been verified.

But that's just the beginning. Read about Larroux's four oddly-nicknamed sisters, her overdue library books, and the "questionable choice" of a clergyman for her funeral. She must have been a delightful woman. Link -via Bits and Pieces

Why Hair Turns Grey

Grey hair may soon be a thing of the past. Scientists have found the cause of greying hair and a clue on how it can be reversed:

Scientists found people who are going grey build up hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicle, which causes hair to bleach itself from the inside out.

However this could be reversed by "an antioxidant" cocktail that allows "re-pigmentation" of the hair.

The discovery of what makes hair grey, published in the FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) journal, was actually made whilst investigating the skin disease vitiligo. [...]

The team, which included experts from Bradford University's School of Life Sciences, blamed "massive epidermal oxidative stress" that leads to the build up of hydrogen peroxide.

Galaxy Entertainment buys Grand Waldo

Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd announced yesterday that it would buy the Grand Waldo casino resort.

Galaxy Entertainment said in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange it would pay HK$3.25 billion (US$419 million) for the property.

Get Nice Holdings, which has a majority stake on the project, also confirmed the deal.

Grand Waldo’s casino already operates under Galaxy Entertainment’s gaming licence.

Last year, Get Nice failed to sell its share in the loss-making property to an unidentified “international group”.

Galaxy Entertainment said the acquisition “is a strategic investment and is expected to have synergistic effect” on the group’s development in Cotai.

Grand Waldo is located across the road from Galaxy Macau, in Cotai.

Tunnel of Love in Ukraine

Roughly seven kilometers from the city of Klevan a three-kilometer stretch of private railway has molded the surrounding trees into an enchanting natural tunnel.

A train transporting wood to the nearby fibreboard factory runs three times daily. Otherwise, the railway tracks make for a lovely for couples and singles alike. The tunnel is at its lushest during the spring and summer when the trees are at the peak of their leafiness, but the colorful foliage of fall and snow-covered branches of winter make for captivating sights as well. Local legend has it that couples who visit the tunnel will be granted a wish, provided their intentions are sincere.
